3 Ways to Have More Fitness Support
Remember back when you were in school? Maybe you're still in school and this is very familiar. But for those of us that aren't going to school anymore we'll have particular memories.
Sometimes they are good memories of teachers that helped us get to the next level and develop. We probably did better in their classes and worked a little harder. And maybe we had some smart friends to do some group study sessions with to help us along.
The point is when we have success in school, or in many other things for that matter, there is often someone else we can look to who helped us. With school this would have been a teacher, a tutor or a friend.
But the cool thing is that this applies to all areas of your life. Think about it.
When I think back to when I made the best gains in the gym it was when I had a training partner. But not just any training partner. It had to be someone who was equally committed. Someone who shared similar goals. And most importantly someone who was a step ahead of where I was. Someone who could show me the ropes and help me get to where I wanted to be.
This is very similar to the saying that your income is related to the five people closest to you. That's not the exact expression but it's something along those lines anyways.
And it applies to your health and fitness as well.
We could hang with these 5 guys...or...
with these 6 people.
Most likely the second group is going to be a better influence. They will probably get more sleep. They will probably train more frequently and more intensely. They will make better nutritional choices. And they probably won't smoke and drink.
Of course these are all generalizations.
Fit people stay up too late. And have cheat meals. And skip training sessions. And enjoy a glass of wine or a beer.
But if I was a betting man and my health depended on the company depended on the company I keep I'd opt for the second group.
So what does this mean for you? Well 3 things.
1. Get Your Family On Board
You get to choose your friends but not your family. So it's important for families to realize the importance of exercise and proper nutrition. They can support each other's goals. They can eat similar meals. They can empathize with each other about difficult workouts. There's someone to catch a ride to training with. You can share in the grocery shopping and meal preparation.
2. Have Friends Supportive of Your Goals
While your friends may not be confused with being on the magazine cover of Men's or Women's Health that doesn't mean you have to cut them off completely. Unless of course they don't believe in you. And support your efforts.
Because if you have 'friends' who make light of your efforts or don't think what you are trying to do is positive you may need to consider the value of their friendship.
3. Find a Mentor
Think back to when you first got started in fitness and training? Did you find it a little intimidating? Were you unsure of the things you were doing during your workouts? Did you maybe feel alone?
I know I felt all of these things the first time I started going to the gym as a teenager. Luckily I persevered, found a training partner and continued to advance my skills and education.
But I realize this experience is the exception rather than the norm. For many it's a challenge just to get started, to feel comfortable, to have support and to enjoy the process.
So here's what we're going to do.
Okanagan Peak Performance Mentors
We're going to have existing clients become mentors for new members. They'll be able to provide advice, meet for training and encourage new people on their journey to better health and fitness.
What will this involve? It can be as simple as exchanging email and becoming fb friends. But just enough that there's someone else, besides your coaches and trainers at Okanagan Peak Performance, who believe in you and want you to do your best. Someone who will hold you accountable for making training sessions but also give you a 'high 5' for doing well on your assessment. It's someone to train for a competition with and go for breakfast with after training.
We've already recognized certain clients that would be ideal as mentors. And we may tap them and see if there's interest.
But I'd like to hear from you.
Is this something you think would help you achieve better results? Is this something that would make the whole training experience more enjoyable? Is this something that would give you another purpose to get started and get over those initial anxieties newbies experience?
Let me know what you think.
In the comments sections let me hear you. Especially if you'd like to be a mentor or have one.
